You may not need x64.  I selected a model with 3Gig to avoid it, and F 
11 installed the PAE kernel without my needing to specify.  In some ways 
PAE is like expanded memory, because it allows a 32 bit system to use 
more than 4 Gig by mapping it in and out, allowing different programs to 
have up to 4 Gig each, if needed and available.  However, unlike 
expanded memory, it's transparant and the programs don't need to ask for 
it.  Try reinstalling the 32 bit version and see if it works better.
