After a couple of reboots, the Xorg logs appeared. Here's a condensed version

You don't have a file /var/log/Xorg.0.log or /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old
starting Ubuntu? Can you access the files and directories of the Ubuntu
installation from Windows? Then you should probably find the files in
$installation_path\var\log\. If you can see the login screen of Ubuntu,
then the X-server seems to have been started and there should be a log
file, which might contain warnings (prepended by '(WW)') and/or errors
('(EE)') helping to debug the issue.
