[tlinux-users:02823] Networking on 1400 Sat, 12 Oct 2002

I just installed Redhat 8.0 on my new Toshiba 1400-103

With the command 'lspci' I can see the buuilt-in network card:

...
00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82551QM Ethernet Controller (rev 10)
...

Now I cannot get my network card activated. In the system log I read the
following:

Oct 12 16:43:58 kroptox insmod:
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/net/eepro100.o: insmod eth0 failed
Oct 12 16:43:58 kroptox insmod:
/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/net/eepro100.o: init_module: No such
device
Oct 12 16:43:58 kroptox insmod: Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect
module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. You may find
more information in syslog or the output from dmesg

Can somebodyy give me a hint on this matter?

Curious. Try the e100 driver instead. What does the kernel source say about that chip?
I have an 82557 and the eepro100 is happy with it. Never seen a 82551.

Thanks, but I am afraid I am not too good with linux internals:
How do I try the e100? Should it be something like

insmod <path>/e100.o

And how do I inspect the Kernel source? Is there a logfile?

Something like that should work, but modeprobe should be easier and more
reliable - like this (as root):

modprobe e100

YES- that works :)

Right after I did that a message box appeared, saying:
" eth0 has an alias to module eepro100 in modules.conf instaead of currently
loaded module e100"

-Just wanted to report that I have RH8.0 Linux up and running on my 1400-103!

The only problem was installing the e100 driver. Everything else no problems.

It looks like the new 8.0 also supports fan-control, because I hear the fan
turning on and off. Also there are some battery-monitor tools available
(Kbattery).

Thanks for all help
