I have installed mandrake 9.0
on my tecra 8200.
Overall, things went reasonably smooth. I am keeping
install notes at:
http://www.justobjects.nl/just/linux/linux-tecra-8200.html
This document particularly focuses on video/X stuff
and contains
XF86Config-4/XFree86.0.log/xfs font config. I've
submitted the doc to
the toshiba-linux webmaster.
There are a few quirks you
may need to be aware of, possibly also on
other toshiba models. To summarize:
- install freezes the machine
during network configuration. This has
been reported for other laptops that have combined
ethernet/WLAN. You
need to configure the network _after_ install.
- the eepro100 NIC driver needs to be replaced with
the e100. Otherwise
networking will stop after some time.
- video/X: you need to use the trident_drv.o from
www.xfree.org/~alanh
to get 1400 res. Many fonts look ugly and video
apps do not work. See my
install notes. (e.g. should the DPI be really 131x126
as xdpyinfo reports?)
- serial port: somehow no /dev/ttyS* has been configured
Apart from these issues
most other devices
(sound/printer/scanner/digital camera/MP3 player)
were configured easily.
If some of you experts could
help me out with in particular the
video/font issues, I'll be even more happy and update
the document.
thanks,
