Debian Linux Sarge 3.1 on Satellite M40-307
(Updated information - 2 from a user)
I would like to send you the following updated information
on
Linux 2.6 on the Toshiba Satellite M40-307.
First, it is possible to use a higher resolution
of 1024x768
with the VESA XFree86 X server. The XF86Config-4
is attached
with this message.
Second, ACPI is working provided the ACPI modules
are loaded
at boot time (this is done by listing them in the
/etc/modules file).
The toshiba_acpi module does not work as the Satellite
M40 is not
using a Toshiba BIOS but a Phoenix BIOS.
Third, after upgrading the pci.ids file the IDE controller
and the
sound card are properly identified as (respectively)
ATI IXP IDE
controller and ATI IXP sound card.
Fourth, after upgrading to a 2.6.15 Linux kernel
and enabling the
drivers for the ATI IXP sound card and ATI IXP IDE
controller it is
possible:
1) To make the sound card and possibly the internal
modem work with
Linux. The sound card and the modem appear in /proc/asound/cards
as
/proc/asound/cards as:
0 [IXP ]: ATIIXP - ATI IXP
ATI IXP rev 2 with ALC250 at 0xc0003400, irq 17
1 [Modem ]: ATIIXP-MODEM - ATI IXP Modem
ATI IXP Modem rev 2 at 0xc0003800, irq 17
The volume has then to be set with the alsamixer program.
2) It is possible to use DMA with Linux and greatly
improve
disk performance.
Fifth, installing the madwifi module it is possible
to have
the Atheros card detected by the Linux Kernel. It
appears
as an entry in /proc/net/wireless.
