Installed Mandrake
Linux 9.2
Issue:
HardDrake GUI does not recognize support for more than 64Thousand
colors.
Mitigation:
Used console version of HardDrake to set resolution/color
depth to 1024x768x24bit
Issue:
CISCO AP350 Wireless PCMCIA card does not connect to network,
even though Mandrake Move (linux on CD) worked with the
card.
Mitigation:
Downloaded the latest pcmcia_cs source and the Cisco AP350
drivers, and re-built the pcmcia card services support for
linux, and all is well.
Issue:
USB serial (rs/232) adapater, and USB keyboard/mouse adapter
did not work
Mitigation:
none yet. Still experimenting. May have to rebuild the USB
support from source.
Issue:
56K internal Modem is not detected
Mitigation:
none yet. Still need to try the latest linmodem implementations.
The linmodem support shipped with mandrake linux 9.2 does
not support the modem.
Issue:
Power Management not functioning
The system batteries die out very quickly under linux. Other
support sites cite the linux support for APM to be inadequate
for managing the power of this laptop.
Mitigation:
None yet. May try re-compiling the kernal, to see if the
pre-compiled kernel's configuration is the source of the
problem.
Overall, Linux on the laptop is very fast, and stable. I
am still looking for other linux distributions to use instead
of mandrake, and the Mandrake Linux is not well suited for
laptops.
However, the Mandrake Move (which is designed
to operate solely from a bootable CD-ROM works much better
than the full distrobution did, as it supported the wireless
network card, and allowed for unencrypted association with
wireless networks. The encryption did not seem to work,
but this may be due to my understanding of how linux configures
encryption on wireless NICs.
